Injury Spates and What Causes Them

We've read in the past about Liverpool FC going through a spate of injuries for which Jurgen Klopp was blamed due to his style of play and his demands for high intensity football, but is this really the case?

Being a coach who demands high intensity "fighting" from my own athletes I can assure there's nothing about high intensity performing which causes injuries, if the training camp is running correctly.

6 players out with hamstring problems is no coincidence however, and there is indeed a problem, but not the one Allardyce is waving at.

It has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with the world around it. That means the prep, the culture, the lifestyle approach and mentorship to the athletes and most importantly, the energy.

Energy is everything, especially when running training camps and with a wrong quality of energy in the camp the injuries can run havoc. Coaches need to be able to "see" their players so they can bring them to their full potential: to take that talent and drive and ability and make it soar. Additionally coaches need to be wise strategists and that comes by walking the talk but more importantly from that, being able to feel one's way through their sport, not just know it. It's that embodied experience and knowing which gives you the ability to see further than your players, but above that you need to know yourself so you can trust your gut, "know" what needs done and "feel" what's happening in your team.

During one of my training sessions I was asked by a man who'd watched from the side of the pool how I managed to harnace my energy strongly. He was astute, I was surprised by his question because I was doing a practice of using water to direct and build my energy: part of my martial arts cross-training done when swimming. He introduced himself, Jan Ekstrand, a member of the Chelsea Football training support team based in Sweden. We spoke, I explained the use of energetics in my training camp for injury prevention, athlete development and performance advancement. He was interested, yet so was I, that in his field of professional football energetics had not been considered. I realised how little it was being used in western sport development.

Energetics are fundamental to health, wellbeing, performance and longevity of athletes, it's also a major player in preventative healthcare.

Injury spates amongst a group are a physical signifier of problems which energetic coaching techniques can remedy and future-proof. One to consider for all those sport coaches and athletes alike who are looking for longevity and an additional bow to their game.
